TDHN At Paley Center’s “Doctor Who: How It All Began”
Waris Hussein, director of the first Doctor Who episode “An Unearthly Child”, made a rare public appearance Tuesday night at the Paley Center. More than 200 fans attended the event, which was sponsored by Who York, Doctor Who New York, and New York Comic Con. Barnaby Edwards, president of Doctor Who New York, acted as moderator.
Throughout the evening, Hussein gave the audience an in depth look behind the production of the episode. He has never recorded episode commentary, which made this event extra special.
An Unearthly Child was shot continuously in a large warehouse. One camera captured the action while two others captured closeups and other angles. The budget for the episode was only £2000. Without Hussein’s work, Doctor Who would have never became the science fiction and cultural icon it is today.
